The Windscanner is the first-ever remote sensing-based, portable, three-dimensional wind vector measuring system
designed to serve the European wind energy research community and the growing wind industry in Europe.

In 2009 WindScanner.dk was established as a national research infrastructure in Denmark and since then – in the context of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) Joint Programme on Wind Energy - work has been done on expanding the project to other European countries and involve partners also engaged in developing similar advanced technologies for remote measurement of atmospheric wind flow and turbulence over large areas. This collaborative work led to the submission to ESFRI and subsequent approval from ESFRI to include The European WindScanner Facility on the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures in November 2010.
The EC is facilitating the preparation of the actual establishment of the facility by supporting the FP7 ESFRI WindScanner Preparatory Phase project that is now ongoing and which will run until the end of 2015. The aim of the Preparatory Phase project is to ensure the timely preparation of the administrative, legal, financial and technical issues necessary for the establishment and operation of the future joint and distributed European WindScanner.eu facility.

Laser show at Rödeserberg
During the period between the end of June and mid August 2014 a unique measurement campaign with a multi lidar system, which consisted of six long-range WindScanners coordinated by the master computer, took place at Rödeserberg in vicinity of Kassel, Germany.

On 4-5 September 2014 an on-campus Demonstration Course of the Short-Range WindScanner.dk (Danish node) wind field measurement technology was held at DTU Wind Energy in Denmark.

On 17 June 2014 a WindScanner.eu meeting will be held at DTU in Lyngby, Denmark. Important items to be discussed are SMART deliverables, a pilot experiment in Kassel to be conducted on 10-11 July, access to data, training & exchange concepts as well as outline of the WindScanner.eu business model.

The partners in the WindScanner.eu Preparatory Phase project are: DTU Wind Energy (Denmark), Fraunhofer IWES (Germany), ECN (the Netherlands), ForWind (Germany), CENER (Spain), SINTEF (Norway), LNEG (Portugal), University of Porto (Portugal), CRES (Greece) and IPU (Denmark). The project will be coordinated by DTU Wind Energy as hub.
